What is Aatm Nirbhar Bharat?
Aatm Nirbhar Bharat was a term coined at the time of covid pandemics in India. it is actually the vision of our honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji. “Aatm Nirbhar” is a Hindi word (आत्मनिर्भर भारत अभियान) which means Self Reliant or less dependency on others. India has been dependent upon Lot of imports, every month India has to pay a large import bill. Our import bill is always more than exports revenue that is why we always have a trade deficit. Why we needed this Aatm Nirbhar Bharat movement:
During the covid time when India faced problems in terms of shortage of Hospital beds, PPE kits, Covid test kits, medicines, ventilators and other necessary respiratory and medical equipments including even the basic supplies of hand sanitizers, 3 ply masks, N95 Masks and what not. We realised that it is the right time for us to depend upon indigenous Innovation and local manufacturing and that is why this term was introduced on 13th May 2020 as Aatm Nirbhar Bharat.
Now it doesn’t mean that we are cut off from the Global world, but it actually means that we are able to produce the products, what we need, locally and eventually play a larger role in the global economy by exporting the surplus. This was the actual vision of Aatm Nirbhar Bharat by Modi ji.
Successful Examples of Aatm Nirbhar Bharat:
One of the greatest examples of Aatm Nirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan is the fact that from zero production of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) Kits before March 2020, India today has created a capacity of locally producing 2 lakh PPE kits daily, which is also growing steadily. Earlier we used to import PPE Kits.
We developed our own testing kits. There are a number of vaccine trials happening in India. Reliance has announced India made 5G network in July 2020. In some way Aatm Nirbhar is the reinforcement of Make in india. Even the Defence ministry is now pushing make in India production of weapons and has a planned target for import ban in the next five years.
So Aatm Nirbhar Bharat vision is a true way to nurture India innovations. I still remember the Indian Missile program launched by Sh. APJ Abdul Kalam, where the first satellite developed in India was on a bullock cart to the launch station, India truly became self reliant on that day only.
One of the main recommendations is to increase bailout packages and support packages to various sectors, increase in liquidity, more credit, time for compliance fillings, change of definition of MSME and many others. One of the most important recommendations is that for upto 200 Crores of Tenders, now global tendering is not needed. This will increase more awards to Indian companies and their competitiveness will increase.
However for some sectors FDI limits has also been increased so that we welcome Foregin Direct investment for the infrastructure development in India. We are proud to say that for these five phase government India has announced a overall package of 20 lakh crore rupees which is almost equivalent to the 10% of GDP of India.

- Phase-I: Businesses including MSMEs

- Phase-V: Government Reforms and Enablers
Key Advantages of Aatm Nirbhar Bharat:
- This program will give boost to innovations and new products development in India
- India will have less import bill and increased exports revenue so in the long run our trade deficit will reduce
- This will help us save foreign currency and earn more foreign currency
- Indian small and medium enterprises in the manufacturing sector will flourish
- This program will help in achieving our other vision of a 5 Trillion economy as well.
Reality Check of few existing sectors in Aatm Nirbhar Bharat:
However Economic Times recently did a reality check of the make in India Smartphone industry, to validate Aatm Nirbhar Bharat, and found in their research article that “Indian manufacturing is either minimal or absent in high tech components like printed circuit boards, chipsets, display and camera modules. These are designed and made in China or Taiwan. This government is pro reform and as citizens one should make sure that we select Modi Ji again in 2024 so that these reforms could continue after announcement of Aatm Nirbhar Bharat.
